What this is

Across thousands of years and widely separated cultures, certain ideas appear again and again: the relationship between thought and experience, the consequences of human actions, the rhythms of nature, the interconnectedness of existence, and the possibility that seemingly different traditions recognized some of the same underlying patterns.

Some similarities may reflect historical transmission. Others may represent independent observations of similar experiences or principles. Understanding the distinction is part of the research.

The Sacred Pattern traces these ideas backward through surviving texts, historical records, and documented scholarship, asking where they first appear, how they develop, and what their recurrence might tell us.

Research you can explore

The Interactive Historical Timeline traces recurring ideas across cultures and centuries. Explore historical entries, approximate dates, associated patterns, surviving evidence, and possible connections to other traditions.

Each entry identifies its evidence status and relevant limitations. Some findings are well documented; others remain provisional or require further verification. Resemblance alone does not establish historical borrowing.

The Sacred Pattern Archive provides additional research connections, Pattern Trails, searchable material, and a private Pattern Ledger. The project also includes the free Florence Scovel Shinn Reader and an expanding series of books examining recurring principles across historical sources, including Before the Game of Life and the developing Before The Kybalion.

A living research archive

Historical research is rarely finished. Ancient manuscripts are incomplete; dates can be disputed; translations differ. New discoveries and better scholarship can change how earlier evidence is understood.

Sources, citations, classifications, and interpretations may be refined as research continues. Developing interpretations are identified as such, and documented historical connections are distinguished from resemblances. Uncertainty is acknowledged without dismissing patterns that deserve serious consideration.

Who writes it

The original publishing and research work is written under the name Asa Merrick. The Sacred Pattern is an independent project, unaffiliated with a university, religious institution, or particular spiritual tradition.

Its purpose is not to ask readers to accept an author's authority, but to provide enough historical context, documentation, and explanation for them to examine the ideas themselves.

What stays free

The complete Florence Scovel Shinn Reader remains free without an email address. The public Interactive Historical Timeline also offers 26 entries free to explore, with no account required.
